13th Havana Biennial 2019 Update.
On the eve of the 116th anniversary of Wifredo Lam’s birth, the Cuban center of contemporary art that bears his name confirmed that 166 artists from 49 countries are coming to the Havana Biennial, which will hold its 13th edition in the Cuban capital, from April 12 to May 12, 2019.
The Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, created for the study, research and promotion of contemporary visual arts, is once again preparing to host the Havana Biennial, an exciting fine arts event that mainly shows the production of Third World countries. After the announcement last spring, “the response from the creators in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and other regions of the world have overflowed”, reported the Cuban official newspaper Granma. “The interest of foreign artists and specialists to collaborate shows the interest in continuing one of the most important projects among its kind at international level. Since the seriousness with which the thematic axes are deployed, the social implication of the exhibitions and plastic actions, as well as the opportunity to confront the contemporary production coming from economically and politically sensitive social systems (Third World made art), the event is an attraction for the art community”.
The 13th Havana Biennial will have, as usual, its headquarters in the Wifredo Lam Center, although the exhibition will be extended to other cultural spaces inside and outside the city. The Cuba Pavilion, the Visual Arts Development Center, the Fototeca de Cuba, some institutions from the Office of the Historian of the City, and other urban locations like the Malecón, will be among the spaces in Havana, while in other provinces such as Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Pinar del Río, and Camagüey, the Biennial will open for the first time, multiple spaces of interaction looking for a wider public.
Our team at ARTempoCuba has conceived a special program and activities for the art lovers who travel to the 13th Havana Biennial with us. Our program, in addition to having full access to the spaces and events of the official show, it will have ample opportunity to visit the studios of the hottest Cuban artists, as well as the underground galleries, where the most recent production of Cuban contemporary art is exhibited. Please check our proposals for the once lifetime event: traveling to the Havana Biennial with the publishers of “Cutting Edge Art in Havana”, the definitive guide for Cuban contemporary art.
